Chitra Divakaruni Chitra Divakaruni

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author and poet. She writes both for adults and children.

Her themes include women, immigration, the South Asian experience, history, myth, magic and celebrating diversity. Her books have been translated into 20 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian and Japanese. Two novels, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, have been made into films. Her collection of short stories, Arranged Marriage, won an American Book Award.

Ms. Divakaruni currently teaches at the nationally ranked creative writing program at University of Houston. Before moving to Texas, Ms. Divakaruni taught creative writing at two local (Bay Area) community colleges: Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill and Foothill College in Los Altos. Much of her work is set in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Born in India, Ms. Divakaruni came to the United States from Calcutta in 1976. She holds a Master’s degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
