Stendhal was a noted French writer of the nineteenth century, a critical realist. He had a late start to his literary career, publishing his first works when he was already in his thirties. However, the spiritual legacy he left in the wake of his literary achievements is significant. His oeuvre includes numerous essays, short stories, novels, novellas, non-fiction works, and travel books. He is known for his accurate psychological analysis of his characters and his concise style. Stendhal is widely regarded as one of the most important forerunners of literary realism. He is most often remembered nowadays for this work, The Red and the Black.
